How to read a report card

  1. 1

    Find your kind of job

Pick a project type above. Firms are scored only against peers doing the same work — window jobs vs. window jobs, remodels vs. remodels.

  2. 2

    Read the grade

The 0–100 score is the source of truth; 50 = peer average. The letter grade is a quick translation. Confidence shows how much data stands behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official City of Ann Arbor site?

No. This is an independent analysis of public City of Ann Arbor building-permit records. It is not affiliated with, produced by, or endorsed by the City of Ann Arbor.

Where does the data come from?

The city's two public permit systems: STREAM (current) and A2Trak (older permits, back to 2008). We use permit types, dates, plan-review revisions, inspection results and completion status. Fees and inspector names are never used or shown.

How often are scores updated?

Daily. New and changed permits are pulled each morning and every firm is re-scored, so scores, ranks and confidence can shift.

What do the score and letter grade mean?

Scores run 0–100 where 50 is the peer average for the same role and kind of work. Letter grades translate the score; see grade cutoffs. A score is not a recommendation to hire or avoid any firm.

I'm a contractor and something about my firm is wrong.

See corrections. We fix misattributed permits, merged or split firm names, and data errors.
